Robert Hurt for Congress

A lot of people are complaining about a single vote Robert Hurt made, but you cannot define a legislator’s career based on one vote. While the 5th District Republican Primary has a large group of great people running to defeat freshman Congressman Tom Perriello (whose track record is full of bad votes) in November, there is one person who can raise the funds to beat him and has a proven track record of pro-life, pro 2nd Amendment, and pro-fiscal responsibility votes in the Virginia General Assembly. That person is Virginia State Senator Robert Hurt.

Hurt has the ability to cross party lines and attract conservative Democrats throughout the 5th District. Hurt also has a foothold in the District that the other candidates do not possess, as he already represents part of the 5th in his State Senate seat. Hurt is a proven winner and has raised more money than all his rivals in the 5th District Primary combined (if you subtract all the debt and self financing the other candidates have done).[1] Hurt has never fallen below 62% of the vote in an election.[2]

Hurt’s legislative career is also one that any conservative would and should support. Robert Hurt has defended the 2nd Amendment time and time again (earning the endorsement of the NRA in every election); Hurt has stood up for the protection of the unborn; and Senator Hurt has upheld Virginia values time and time again. Hurt has sponsored and written bills in the Virginia General Assembly to extend federal protections to military service members voting overseas; to require sex offenders to provide the Virginia State Police with their email address when registering as a sex offender; and to make it easier for a small business to obtain a business license.[3] Hurt has also supported the victims of crime and stood against criminals and street gangs while serving in the Virginia General Assembly. Hurt has opposed the federal government’s encroachment on the rights of Virginians by co-sponsoring HB 10, which says Virginia residents do not have to comply with the individual mandate of the Obamacare bill.[4] Hurt has also opposed the federal and state governments’ use of eminent domain to take private citizens’ property by co-sponsoring HJ 114 Constitutional amendment; taking of private property for public use, and finally Hurt has supported the rights of gun owners throughout the state by co-sponsoring HB 69 Firearms, ammunition, etc.; those manufactured and retained in state not subject to federal law.[5]

Robert Hurt is the only candidate with a proven record of winning and fundraising and the only choice on June 8th.

  1. Thanks for this. Perriello has already started the attacks. He claims that Hurt is a tax raiser. Because, as we all know, Perriello & the Dems have never ever raised a single tax. And they have never ever spent one damn dime of our money.

This is going to be THE race to watch going forward.

You forgot to mention that Hurt started his primary race with the most professional staff that will make the transition to full nominee status much easier. In campaigning for this nomination, they have dotted every i & crossed every t.

He has gone to events all over: several a day (which you’ve gotta do if you want to win). The ads are professional, the mailers are professional & he has made no mistakes.

He is the best prepared to take on Perriello.

  2. I agree with you, Kelley.

The other candidates have no record to run on, they are vastly underfunded when compared to Perriello, I would say they all have good campaign staff, but not all of them have staff, that can help defeat Perriello.

  3. You’ve got a ton of links to back up your case, but I want to know what makes you think that Hurt has any history of appealing to conservative Democrats.

  4. NAS, my first response to you would be that he has run so well in his own district–conservative Dems (what, like those in Congress????) had to have voted for him.

now, would those “conservative Dems” in his Senate district choose RH over the “i’m really a centrist Perriello” (as you blogged)–yes, if they have been paying attention. Congress, most especially the Dems, have been so disgraceful in thumbing their nose at the American people, they come to this election with a taint. and a stink.

  5. The proven record will be used against RH, in fact Democrats already are making a joke of RH’s voting record, hmm; he reached across the isle and now is being laughed at. See for yourselves: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJDU-E3BsJI

  6. @Cardinalcrossing, the dems are going to attack any Republican candidate, what money is McPadeen, Morton, or Verga going to have to counter those attacks, none. McPadden and Verga have both said enough that they could be attacked on and with their lack of money they wont be able to counter it.

  7. Kelley,

Not all districts are split evenly between Democrats and Republicans.

John McCain got 58% of the vote in Hurt’s State Senate district, and that was with an amazing pro-Obama African American turnout in Danville. Hurt got 75% against a no-name, no-money challenger who didn’t even run as a Democrat. That election wasn’t even competitive or meaningful in anyway.

McCain won 60% in the 16th District now represented by Merricks. Hurt got 62% in his “competitive” election in 2003 when he actually had a real Democratic opponent.

  8. It is a real shame we have to choose a candidate like Hurt here because he has the funds to beat a outright Socialist like perriello(no cap. P).All this talk of a centrist makes me want to puke on all of you.John McCain was a LOOSER though I voted for him.We need SOLID conservative to represent(not lead)us and Hurt is not even close to being one.As far as conservative Democrates,I have never met one so to Hell will all of the Socialist Dem’s.Conservative’s need to grow a set and take the Republican party by the throat and let the weak centrists come to us.This is the last at bat and I am seeing the “centrists” in the Republican paty pissing it away.No wonder they have been on a ten year loosing streak. Stand on principle or go the Hell over to the Democrats. At any rate, this ship has took on to much water to bring back .Once the economy completly tanks, and money is worthless you will wish you had choosen a Conserative instead of a middle of the road spineless “centrist”.

  10. I can’t believe that you want to repeal the health care bill when you haven’t even read it. You said you wanted insurance companies to sell insurance across state lines. IT’S ALREADY IN THE BILL!!! You complain about the cuts to Medicare. THEY ARE CUTS TO ELIMINATE FRAUD, NOT PROGRAMS!!! You want to balance the budget, but the only thing you can think of to cut is congress’s salaries. That’s like spitting in the ocean!! You have signed on with providing support to companies that send jobs oversees. That’s why so many people in Danville and Martinsville are out of work. You blame Mr. Perriello and Obama for deficits. If it wasn’t for that awful war in Iraq that Bush started, we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in financially. Of course, there’s the stimulus, which, without it, the unemployment rate would be more like 15%. Vote for you?? I think not. And I voted for republicans for 50 years!!! Sandra Ferguson

  12. You are completely correct about our economy tanking and money being worthless! Earmarks should not be allowed and our trade with China (they own us-so God help us if they decide to call our debt to them) should be balanced!!!! Obama really did go for change! BAD DECISIONS EVERYWHERE!!!!!
